Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Guide: First Session and Early Unlocks

The quick answer

Start with the Campaign for a controlled introduction or Multiplayer for the unlock treadmill. Reach Player Level 4 before building a custom class, then invest in one flexible weapon instead of rebuilding after every match.

The quick answer

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is easiest to learn when you choose the mode that matches the session you actually have. The Campaign is a 16-mission story, Multiplayer is the competitive unlock treadmill, and DMZ is a persistent extraction mode built around preparation and successful exfiltration. Do not try to learn all three systems in one sitting.

A practical first session

  1. Set the controls before chasing unlocks. Start with a stable field of view, motion blur off, a comfortable sensitivity, and a controller or mouse setup you can repeat. The Best Settings guide gives a baseline.
  2. Play until Player Level 4. Create-a-Class unlocks at Player Level 4. Before that point, the game supplies default loadouts. Reach the threshold, then build one flexible assault-rifle class instead of rebuilding after every match.
  3. Use the Campaign as a controlled tutorial. The Campaign teaches movement, cover, aiming, and mission pacing without the pressure of a live lobby. It also unlocks campaign rewards and gives you a clear 16-mission checklist.
  4. Try DMZ after you understand the inventory. DMZ is not a smaller Multiplayer playlist. You take gear into a deployment, risk losing it on failure, and build a Forward Operating Base between runs. Read the DMZ Guide before treating a deployment as a deathmatch.
  5. Use Multiplayer to learn maps, not to force a meta build. The launch pool has 12 Core 6v6 maps, plus Shipment after launch, three 32v32 Ground War maps, four 2v2 Gunfight maps, and Kill Block. Learn sightlines and exits first; copy a top build after you know the range you expect to fight at.

Early unlocks and progression

  • The launch arsenal contains 33 weapons across assault rifles, SMGs, shotguns, LMGs, marksman rifles, sniper rifles, pistols, launchers, and melee.
  • Create-a-Class unlocks at Player Level 4.
  • You do not have to level every gun from zero for every attachment. In MW4, each attachment is unlocked once and then becomes available on compatible weapons, reducing duplicate grinding.
  • Weapon leveling unlocks attachments and eventually an Apex Attachment. Apex Attachments do not use a normal attachment slot and can change a weapon’s role, but they still have tradeoffs.
  • Gunny can generate a starting build. Treat it as a baseline, test the result in the Firing Range, and adjust for your range and input.

Useful early weapon levels from the official unlock table: the Han 86 and ISO Nightshade are available at Player Level 4, the M4 at 14, the VEL 46 at 13, the Oris 8.6 at 11, and the Hyeon Burst at 21. That makes the Han 86 and ISO Nightshade natural first investments for a new account.

Movement and gunfight habits that matter

  • Mantle cancel: begin a mantle, then cancel it to peek over cover without committing your body to the other side.
  • Pipe climbing: pipes are additional vertical routes. Hang, gather information, and drop back instead of exposing yourself for a full climb every time.
  • Supine slide: sprint and double-tap crouch to slide onto your back while keeping the gun pointed forward. It breaks the sightline an enemy expects.
  • Chain movement: slide into mantles and mantles into slides. Do not treat them as isolated animations.
  • Do not over-sprint: tactical sprint is tied to stamina and fatigue. Sprint in bursts and use slides to keep momentum without arriving at the fight exhausted.
  • Hipfire is viable: MW4 removed weapon bloom. Shots go where the weapon points, so movement, recoil, and sway matter more than a random spread cone.
