Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Guide

The quick answer

DMZ is a solo-or-squad extraction mode set in Hajin. You bring gear into a deployment, complete orders, and try to exfil; failed runs can cost your equipment, while the Forward Operating Base carries progression between matches.

The quick answer

DMZ is an extraction mode, not a respawn playlist. You deploy into Hajin with a chosen Operator and loadout, loot or complete objectives, fight AI and rival humans, and try to reach exfil with the items that should survive. A successful exfil converts cash and loot into persistent progress; failure costs the gear that was not protected by a secure slot.

The deployment loop

  1. Prepare at the Forward Operating Base (FOB). Check Orders, choose an Active Duty Operator, equip a loadout from the Stash, and decide whether the goal is looting, an Order, a Dynamic Operation, or a boss.
  2. Infil into Hajin. The map starts with a radiation timer. Every deployment also has its own Threat Level and a rolling set of objectives.
  3. Loot with a purpose. Containers give cash, armor, weapons, resources, and 3D Printer Ingredients. Open caches and locked rooms only when the route supports it; the After Action Report rewards a balanced mix of combat, loot, and objectives.
  4. Complete an Order or Dynamic Operation. Orders teach the mode and upgrade the FOB. Dynamic Operations add a clear objective and a Supply Drop whose rarity rises with each successful completion in the deployment.
  5. Watch the threat and the clock. Fighting raises local Threat and can draw reinforcements. If the radiation is closing, stop chasing optional loot and move to an exfil.
  6. Extract with the items you want to keep. Cash is banked and most carried loot moves to the Stash or your Operator. Protect the most important item in a Secure Slot if your backpack has one.

FOB stations and unlocks

Station Unlock What it does
Operators Immediate Choose Active Duty Operators, spend Trait Points, recover MIA Operators.
DMZ Orders Immediate Select story and tutorial objectives that reward XP, cash, gear, and progression.
Stash / Loadout Immediate Store shared loot and equip the next deployment; the starting Stash holds 40 items and 12 weapons.
Firing Range Immediate Test weapons and optics from under 10 m to over 100 m.
Survival Kits Immediate Open themed supply packs for medical, armor, equipment, or general preparation.
3D Printer DMZ Level 2 Craft consumables, armor, backpacks, tacticals, lethals, field upgrades, and FOB upgrades from recipes and ingredients.
Boss Board Complete the second DMZ Order Buy Lieutenant intel and review Commander information.
Vendor DMZ Level 5 Buy rotating weapons and equipment with DMZ Cash.
Gunsmith DMZ Level 10 Buy attachments and build weapons using DMZ Cash.
Dog Tag Case DMZ Level 20 Display extracted Operator Dog Tags and upgrade bounty-related rewards.

DMZ has its own 1-70 progression track, separate from the 1-55 player level. Unsecured gear is lost on a failed exfil, so separate permanent progression from the items you are willing to risk.

Operators, traits, and MIA recovery

  • You start with two Active Duty Operator slots. Progressing DMZ unlocks another; Vault Edition owners start with three.
  • Each Operator has a Dog Tag with 18 levels, from Steel I to Onyx III. Each level grants one Trait Point.
  • There are 66 Traits across Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist trees. A single Operator can earn 18 points, which is enough to max two trees or spread across all three.
  • Traits are committed once selected. Higher trait investment makes an MIA Operator more expensive to recover.
  • If an Operator dies, they become MIA until you pay DMZ Cash to recover them with their Traits. Recovery returns the Operator without gear, so re-equip before deploying.
  • After 18 Trait Points, an Operator can Prestige. Each Prestige grants a permanent random Trait. The maximum is three permanent Prestige Traits.

Crafting and economy

The 3D Printer uses three inputs: Recipes, four broad Resources (Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals, Metals), and specific 3D Printer Ingredients. Most recipes begin locked. Unlock them through DMZ leveling, Orders, and extracting the recipe itself. Recipes are consumed at exfil and added permanently; they also pay DMZ Cash.

Useful first crafts are Bandages, Medkits, 1-Plate and 2-Plate Armor Vests, and Small/Medium Backpacks. Upgrading the Printer expands what it can make and improves the FOB. Do not spend every rare ingredient on a disposable item; station upgrades improve every later deployment.

Gunsmith in DMZ

The DMZ Gunsmith uses DMZ Cash. Weapon progression is shared between Multiplayer and DMZ, so levels earned in either mode unlock the same attachments. You can build up to five attachments on a purchased weapon; looted weapons can have up to eight slots.

To buy a weapon repeatedly, find its Weapon Manual in Hajin and extract with it. Blueprints can be used once for free and then repurchased at a discount if lost. Cosmetics do not cost DMZ Cash.

Orders, bosses, and after-action reports

  • Orders are the guided objective system and the most reliable early progression route.
  • Dynamic Operations produce a Supply Drop and a clear objective; Supply Drop rarity improves with each successful Op in that deployment.
  • Side Ops are lower-intensity tasks such as finding a drop, repairing a truck, or climbing a radio tower to reveal a Lieutenant.
  • Lieutenants are high-value targets. Killing one can drop their signature weapon, a key to a named loot room, and a Dog Tag Case. Picking up the Case broadcasts your position, so leave quickly.
  • Commanders include Colossus, Deathstalker, and the North Korean battle tank. They are heavily armored and may require coordinated fire or vehicles.
  • The After Action Report grades Objectives, Combat, and Looting from F to S++, then applies DMZ XP to the player track and the Operator Dog Tag.

A safe first-session plan

  1. Deploy with a cheap loadout and an Order that can be completed near the insertion point.
  2. Loot armor, a medkit, and a suppressor or reliable mid-range weapon; do not chase a boss on the first run.
  3. Complete one Order or Dynamic Op, then exfil. Early successful extractions are more valuable than a risky full backpack.
  4. At the FOB, unlock the 3D Printer at DMZ Level 2, store ingredients, and start buying the upgrades that expand the Stash and cash bank.
  5. Add a second Operator only after you understand the first one’s Traits. Use different Operators for looting, combat, or support rather than spreading points randomly.
